Every year, Decatur-Morgan County attracts performers and artists from around the world, showcasing their talents in concerts, art exhibitions and special events. You can find regional, national and international artwork on display at the Carnegie Visual Arts Center or take in a play or concert at the historic Princess Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Princess Theatre for the Performing Arts in Decatur, Alabama
 
From a livery stable to an art deco showplace, the Princess Theatre has been a North Alabama landmark for more than a century. The original structure, built in 1887 as a hotel’s horse stable, was later renovated into a vaudeville playhouse, attracting world-class comedians of the time such as McIntyre and Heath. The current theatre seats up to 670 guests and hosts theatrical and musical performances on its Broadway size stage. Annual events include the Big Band Bash, featuring local, national and internationally-recognized jazz musicians. The Princess Theatre (112 2nd Avenue NE) is open weekdays for backstage and historical tours (call 256-350-1745 to schedule). www.princesstheatre.org
     
Carnegie Visual Arts Center in Decatur, Alabama
 
The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is housed in one of Decatur’s most significant historical buildings, the former Carnegie Library. The arts center hosts local, regional, national and international art exhibits and offers art classes for all ages. The Carnegie Library building was built in 1904 by millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who helped fund several thousand Carnegie Libraries throughout the world. The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., every third Thursday until 8 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. -4 p.m. Admission to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center (207 Church Street NE) is free. www.carnegiearts.org
