Staycation Challenge Guidelines
There is so much to do in Decatur and Morgan County in the winter (even during a global pandemic)! Each season, we will be offering themed Staycations for locals and visitors to get away and forget about the daily grind for a little while! Want to know how to join the fun? It’s easy! Simply, drop by the Visitor Center after your stay and provide proof of your stay for a FREE gift! Yep, it’s that simple.
What to DO
Located on the banks of the Tennessee River in North Alabama, Decatur and Morgan County is a growing area that has a lot to offer, especially in the fall. Whether you like museums, shopping, or spending time in the great outdoors there is something for everyone! Decatur-Morgan County is located in Northern Alabama, approximately twenty minutes from Huntsville and a little over an hour from Birmingham and Nashville.
The county is within a day’s drive from nearly 50% of the nation’s population, including cities such as Atlanta, Memphis, St. Louis and New Orleans.

Cook Museum of Natural Science
The Cook Museum of Natural Science is a state-of-the-art natural science museum in downtown Decatur, AL. It provides a hands-on, immersive experience where kids can explore, interact with, and learn about nature. Families leave the Cook Museum feeling fulfilled by their time together and inspired by the things they saw and learned.

Princess Theatre for the Performing Arts
The Princess Theatre is a regional gathering place, serving as a generational bridge presenting local and professional artists with the support of the community, businesses, and state and local governments. Through education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment, the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts will continue to be a landmark, reflecting the history of Decatur and providing transformative artistic experiences for a multicultural and diverse population.
Due to Covid-19, the Princess has had to get a little creative. They have started a movie series that is absolutely fantastic! You name it and they are probably showing it and we’d love to share this with you for FREE! That’s right, completely free. Carnegie Visual Arts Center
Since opening in 2003, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center in Decatur, Alabama, has provided educational and cultural opportunities to the community. Through their programs, collections, and events, they encourage greater involvement in art at all levels and ages. They want their visitors and students to enjoy the visual art they view at the Carnegie, and to leave with new and innovative knowledge they can share with the community.
Oh, did we mention that the Carnegie Visual Arts Center is a completely FREE attraction? It just doesn’t get much better than that, does it? They have some incredible exhibits taking place this fall that you do not want to miss!
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 35,000-acres of naturally preserved woodlands offering a unique opportunity to experience wildlife in its natural habitat. Established in 1938 as an experimental home for waterfowl, the Givens Wildlife Interpretive Center serves as the welcome center for the refuge.
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect fall destination! Fall colors traditionally peak in Alabama during late October and early November. The refuge is also free to the public.
What to EAT
The South has always been known for its down-home cooking, but here, we’re known for some of the best. Some of the world’s best. Whether it’s Big Bob Gibson’s smoked barbecue with white sauce or Simp McGhee’s cajun creations — you better bring your appetite!
